My friend had told me this place was not the same since new ownership so I had avoided eating here. I finally went with my cousin on a Tuesday for lunch. I had an egg roll, combo order of the chicken in black bean sauce and general chow’s chicken, and a half order of the special (pineapple pork). My cousin had a combo of broccoli beef and lomein, and a half order of the steak fingers. Everything tastes exactly as I remember it. My mom worked there for 20 years as a cook so I grew up eating here and eventually worked there as a server myself as did my cousin. Most of the reviews here are positive but some state that the taste is not the same or not as good and I just simply don’t agree, unless I just came on a lucky day. One of the original cooks is also still there. There are two differences that I did notice. They are positive changes. The American food is better. I think the steak fingers are made from scratch instead of frozen. The pork chop on the special I had is also a thicker cut of meat. My friend tried it one more time and still doesn’t think it’s the same but I will definitely be back to taste my childhood every time I come to town. If you’re hesitating on trying it, don’t. Just make the decision for yourself if it’s the same or not.
Had a really nice lunch with a friend today. Our service was really top notch. Good recommendations which was needed as the menu is HUGE! i especially loved the fresh brewed tea. Food was very good and I had enough to bring home for dinner. Our eggrolls were over the top good! The owner was very gracious and we will definitely be back...especially for the weekend specials!

Food was very good but the spicy chicken noodle soup was phenomenal! Tasted like something my mom would make. Boyfriend travels frequently so we'll be popping in again.

I had the pleasure of dining at Mathis Field Cafe in San Angelo, and I must say, it's a hidden gem for lovers of Chinese cuisine. The locally owned establishment boasts a menu full of delicious options, but their famous egg rolls truly steal the show. The crispy exterior perfectly complements the flavorful filling, creating a delightful blend of textures and tastes. The cafe's dedication to authenticity is evident in every dish, making it a must-visit for anyone seeking a genuine Chinese food experience in the heart of Texas.
I have been eating here since I was a kid, and even through a change in ownership it is just as good as ever. This place is amazing! Enjoy!
